CMA Film & Audio Festival

The CMA Film & Audio Festival encourages and promotes excellence in student video work by showing examples of top-notch projects in several categories.

Those shown at the film and audio festival at the fall convention will receive an award for their selection.

The submission period for the Film and Audio Festival has closed. The promotional and audio submission deadline is noon Nov. 2.

 

Eligibility

All work must be completely produced by college students, and all entries (except promotional entries) must have been completed after Sept. 1, 2018.

For the promotional videos, you must be a paid registrant at the fall convention. Attendance at the convention for other film festival entrants is encouraged but not required.

Deadlines

For documentary, creative, video, animation, audio and other non-promotional categories: midnight Monday, Sept. 16, 2019.

Promotional video and audio deadline: 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 2, at a booth next to the registration table, via flash drive or hard drive.

The winners will be announced and winning entries will be shown during the ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.

Categories

Compete in any of these categories —

  1. Short documentary

Non-fiction videos 2:30-7 minutes in length.

  1. Long documentary

Non-fiction videos 7-15 minutes in length. May be edited to comply with length limits.

  1. Creative

Short films under 5 minutes in length. May be edited to comply with length limits.

  1. Video news package

A short news package designed for broadcast or web distribution. Maximum length: 150 seconds.

  1. Video sports package

A short sports package designed for broadcast or web distribution. Maximum length: 150 seconds.

  1. Video feature package

A short feature package designed for broadcast or web distribution. Maximum length: 150 seconds.

  1. Video newscast

Up to 30 minutes in length (one entry per college)

  1. Promotional video

Created onsite at the fall convention and is between 30-60 seconds. Entrants will be provided with stills and video of the following year’s convention location to incorporate with their own footage when making their promo video entry.

  1. Animation 

Creative, fictional animation. May be combined with real action. Must be under 5 minutes in length. May be edited to comply with length limits.

  1. Audio documentary 

Non-fictional audio story, expository in nature. (Please submit no more than 15 minutes for consideration by the judges.) May be edited to comply with length limits.

  1. Audio creative performance 

Creative audio performance intended to entertain. May include humor, fiction, promotional or musical and audio performance. Up to 5 minutes in length.

  1. Best DJ personality

Audio performance as a DJ as part of an internet or broadcast radio show. Submit no more than 5 minutes of DJ work, and edit to omit songs.

  1. Promotional audio 

On-site creation of a 30-60 second audio clip to promote CMA 2020. The promotional audio must be compiled and edited during the convention.

All submissions will be ranked according to, but not limited to, the following guidelines —

Presentation
Technical proficiency of video and audio production
Proper file submission
Ethical considerations and
Deadline.

All productions must be 100 percent original and 100 percent student produced.

Submission guidelines

All entries, including the promotional video, must be accompanied by a $20 entry fee.

Promotional videos must be submitted in person via flash drive or hard drive from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 2, next to the registration booth. All other submissions must be turned in via Google Drive —

  1. Use an existing Gmail account or set up a new one.
  2. Create a folder with your name and entry type (ex: SmithLongDoc).
  3. Upload your file to the folder, also using that name format
  4. Send an invitation to share your folder with Tom Grant, tom.grant@gmail.com, or Paul Glover pgloverhsu@gmail.com.

All submissions must be

  • Smaller than 5 GB.
  • File type .mov, .mp4 or .m4v.
  • Audio entries should be .mp3.

By uploading/submitting your files, you agree to the following:

  1. The video may be shown at the Film & Audio Festival Screening at the convention.
  2. The video may be uploaded to the CMA film and audio festival website for others to see
  3. The promotional/audio video may be used by CMA in various venues and on the web.
  4. All the work was completed by students.
  5. The video was completed between Sept. 1, 2018, and Nov. 1, 2019.

Film & Audio Festival Screening

The winners will be announced and winning entries will be shown during the convention. The top winners in each category will be given a plaque.

Each of the winning entries may be shown at the film and audio festival, though time restrictions may require that only excerpts of longer entries can be shown.

The judges will be professionals in the field. All awards are chosen at the discretion of the judges. Categories may be combined or expanded, if needed, and an entry may be moved into another category if it does not appear to fit the criteria for the original category.
